Privacy Policy

This Web site was designed and is hosted by Society for Science & the Public, a nonprofit organization and publisher of Science News magazine.

We respect the privacy of children and do not collect any more personal information (first name, age, city, and state) than reasonably necessary to enable them to participate in the activities we offer at our Web site. We do not have any agreements with outside organizations to collect personal information at our site.

Children under the age of 13 should always get permission from their parents before sending any information about themselves (such as their names and e-mail addresses).

The information we collect from children is used to respond to children’s specific requests to participate in activities such as:

  • entering contests.
  • voting in polls or otherwise expressing an opinion.
  • submitting artwork and other material for prizes.
  • subscribing to an e-mail newsletter.

If you submit stories, artwork, comments, or anything else to us that is posted on our site, you will be identified on our site only by first name, age, city, and state. If you send us an e-mail with a question or comment or enter one of our contests, we will write back using your e-mail address, but we will not keep the address or use it again.

If you choose to provide us with personal information in an e-mail or by filling out a form with your personal information and submitting it to us through our Web site, we use that information to respond to your message. We do not create individual profiles with the information you provide or give it to any private organizations.

If you do nothing during your visit but browse through the Web site, read pages, or download information, we gather and store certain information about your visit automatically. This information does not identify you personally. We automatically collect and store only the following information about your visit: Internet domain name and IP address, the type of browser and operating system used to access our site; the date and time you access our site; the pages you visited; and if you linked from to the Science News for Kids Web site from another Web site, the address of that site.

We use this information to help us make our site more useful to visitors—to learn about the number of visitors to our site and the types of technology our visitors are using. We do not track or record information about individuals and their visits.

We provide some links to external or third-party Web sites. These sites are not part of our Web site services and are not under our control. We are not responsible for the content or safety and privacy practices at any sites linked from our pages.

Although this site is not covered by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (which covers only commercial sites directed primarily at young children), Science News for Kids endorses the spirit of that Act and, hence, has this privacy policy.
